Ingredients for French Toast

4     Large Granny Smith Apples
1/2   Cup water

1     teaspoon cinnamon
        sugar to taste (opt)

3/4   Cup brown sugar, packed
3    Tablespoons light corn syrup
3    Tablespoons butter

3/4  cup walnuts, or pecans, chopped

12   slices firm white bread ( like french bread )

4    eggs, beaten
1   and 1/4 cups skim milk
1   teaspoon vanilla
1/4  teaspoon nutmeg
1/8  teaspoon salt

STEP 1,  4 Granny Smith ApplesSTEP 2,  Sliced apples in skillet with 1/2 cup water over apples.  Simmer 4-5 minutes until apples are softened.  Drain in colander.STEP 3,  Place apples in a bowl and gently mix in cinnamon and a little sugar if apples are tart.  Set aside.STEP 4,  In the same skillet, combine 3/4 cup brown sugar, 3 Tblsp. light corn syrup, and 3 Tblsp. butter.  Cook and stir over medium heat until sugar melts and mixture just begins to come to a slow boil. STEP 5,  Spray Pam in 13 x 9 inch baking dish.  Pour Carmel syrup in pan and spread evenly.   Sprinkle with 3/4 cup chopped nuts.STEP 6,  Place 6 slices of bread on top of syrup and nuts.STEP 7,  Divide apples among bread slices.STEP 8,  Top with remaining 6 slices of bread.STEP 9,  Whisk together 4 eggs, 1 1/4 cups milk, 1 teaspoon vanilla, 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg, & 1/8 teaspoon salt.  Pour over "apple sandwiches."   COVER and refrigerate over night.STEP 10,  Place platter on top of baked french toast and flip out onto the platter.    All the caramel and nuts will be on top!   Yum!!    Serve warm with Warm Vanilla Cream Sauce.
Directions:

Peel, core, and slice apples.  Place in a medium-size skillet.  Pour 1/2 cup water over apples.  Simmer 4-5 minutes until apples are softened. 
Drain apples in colander.  Place in a bowl and gently mix in cinnamon and a little sugar if apples are tart.  Set aside.

In the same skillet, combine brown sugar, corn syrup, and butter.
Cook and stir over medium heat until sugar melts and mixture just begins to come to a slow boil.
Pour into a 13 x 9 inch baking dish sprayed with Pam.  Sprinkle with nuts.

Place 6 slices of bread on top of syrup and nuts.
Divide apples among bread slices and top with remaining 6 slices.

Whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla, nutmeg and salt.  Pour over "apple sandwiches".  
Cover and refrigerate over night.

In the morning take out of refrigerater 1/2 hour before baking. 
Preheat oven to 325* and bake uncovered for 40 minutes.
Remove from oven, cover with a serving platter, and invert.
Cut each sandwich in half diagonally and serve with Vanilla Sauce.

Serves 6.

NOTE:  Peaches can be used in place of Apples.

Ingredients for Vanilla Cream Sauce

1/2    cup sugar
1    Tablespoon cornstarch
1    cup water

2    Tablespoons Butter
1     Tablespoon Vanilla

Directions:

Mix sugar, cornstarch and water in a small saucepan.
Cook, stirring often, over medium heat until thick and bubbly.

Remove from heat, add butter and vanilla.
Stir until butter melts.
Assemble and refrigerate overnight and bake in the morning!    YUM!!!
